NF Avalanche Methodology Course
NF Alpine Avalanche Methodolgy Course
Do you already have experience with ski touring, winter mountain travel, and the NF Advanced Avalanche Course—and want to take the next step toward becoming an instructor?
The Method Course covers the professional competence required for instructors who will teach day courses, basic avalanche courses, and advanced avalanche courses.
The NF Avalanche Method Course builds on the NF Advanced Avalanche Course and provides in-depth theoretical and practical competence in terrain assessment, avalanche hazard evaluation, companion rescue, and safe group travel. This course forms the foundation for further qualification as an avalanche instructor and is mandatory for participants who wish to continue to the NF Instructor (Veileder) Course.
The course aims to give participants solid understanding of:
-
Terrain assessment in planning and execution
-
Identifying avalanche problems and understanding snowpack development
-
Group dynamics and decision-making processes
-
Practical and efficient companion rescue
Teaching is problem-based, and participants are expected to take an active role in both planning and execution.
The course is not an exam, but facilitates experiential learning, reflection, and the development of safe practices in avalanche terrain.
This course is for you if you:
-
Have completed the NF Advanced Avalanche Course (Alpine)
-
Have experience with ski touring and winter mountain travel
-
Want to develop as a trip leader, instructor, or safer ski touring enthusiast
This course is mandatory for further application to the NF Avalanche Instructor Course in the Norwegian Mountaineering Forum (Norsk Fjellsportforum) certification pathway.
Participants must be prepared for long and demanding days in the winter mountains.

Location: Areas are selected based on weather and conditions — we follow the principle of “travel according to ability and conditions”
For courses based in Oppdal or Sunndal, we utilize areas that represent both inland and coastal snow climates, such as:
Oppdal and Storlidalen, and Sunndal, Innerdal, Ålvundeid, Øksendal, or Jordalsgrenda.
Route suggestions and area selection criteria are provided by the instructor and decided together with the participants.
All teaching is carried out outdoors as much as possible, with theory always linked to real-world, practical situations.
We follow the principle of “travel according to ability and conditions”, and adapt course content, pace, and terrain to the group’s experience and skill level.
Our goal is an engaging learning environment with active participation and a strong focus on realistic scenarios.
