Swift Water Rescue Technician course (summer)
The safety of you and your colleagues is of the utmost importance. A course in swift water rescue is useful in many contexts for various industries. Opplev Oppdal is a certified supplier of Swift Water Rescue Technician courses in collaboration with the International Rescue Instructors Alliance (IRIA). The course follows international standards.
Swift Water Rescue Technician level 3
Level 3 is a three-day course in swift water rescue. This course is designed for people who work in rescue services, with guiding or river paddling and other professionals wishing to expand their skills. This course covers many of the same skills as in level 2 but focuses on dealing with even more complex situations and requirements.
The course consists of three days (24 hours) and a theoretical component, which participants complete online before the practical course starts.
The course takes place in a section(s) of the river with medium level of difficulty, graded 2-3 out of 6 on the international scale of river difficulty.The course includes:
- Swift water swimming
- Route planning
- Use of throwlines
- Use of rescue flotation suit
- Foot/body entrapments
- Rescue techniques including self-rescue, buddy rescue and recue of others
- Basic and complex rope systems
- Risk assessment and evaluation of the working environment
- Rescue equipment
- Communication and planning
- Principles in rescue situations
The aim of this course is for the participants to be able to assess risks and measures in a river environment as well as assess efficient methods to carry out rescue operations of various levels of difficulty. The participants must demonstrate competence in grade 2 flowing water.
Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate for Swift Water Rescue Technician Level 3 from IRIA. The certificate is valid for 3 years. The course meets NFPA standards (www.nfpa.com) which are guiding for many rescue services.
Prerequisite for participation:
Participants must be proficient swimmers and in good health. Experience in a river environment, either in a work or recreation context, is recommended but not a requirement.
Equipment:
- Flotation vest (type 3/5)
- Helmet
- Dry suit or full body wetsuit
- Shoes for use in the river
- Throwline
